Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong warning about artificial intelligence, declaring a threat to humanity that requires an urgent global action, including strict regulations on major technologies.
“Today, the Church offers its social education to respond to another industrial revolution and innovations in the field of artificial intelligence that involves challenges for human dignity, justice and work,” Leo told a Cardinals room in the Vatican in one of his first addresses as Pontiff.
Leo’s comments, which were delivered during his first formal audience with the Cardinals College in the Vatican Synod Hall on May 10, were reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The prediction this week hosts executives from companies such as IBM, Cohere, Anthropic and Palantir for a significant summit on the ethics of the AI.
Leo is expected to issue a written message, but he has not yet held private meetings with Tech’s delegated directors.
Microsoft President Brad Smith is expected to bring Vatican officials to the end of this month and Google is in discussions for a future audience with the pope.
By 2040, artificial intelligence is expected to automate or significantly transform 50% to 60% of jobs worldwide, with some estimates that suggest that up to 80% could be affected by 2050.

Francis’s participation grew after the famous image generated by Ai in a white jacket was viral in 2023, demonstrating that the potential of the AI distorts reality.
He later warned the world leaders that the “options on the part of the machines” do not have to replace human decision -making.
Now Pope Leo, who has a title of mathematics and a deeper familiarity with the technology than his predecessor, is expected to make a church defense one more step. Vatican and clergy officials see a moral imperative to act as a global awareness of what they consider to be a potentially dehumanizing force.
“These tools should not be demonized, but they must be regulated,” said Cardinal Versaldi.
“The question is, who will regulate them? It is not credible that they are regulated by their manufacturers. There must be a higher authority.”
