The CNN national security analyst, Josh Campbell, defended the Secretary of National Security Kristi Noem and the actions of the federal agents who forcibly eliminated Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) On Thursday of a press conference in Los Angeles, saying that his response followed the standard security protocol.
Speaking during an appearance in the “Arena” of CNN with Kasie Hunt, Campbell, a former FBI special agent, broken down the incident and said that agents were justified in their initial efforts to escort Padilla outside the room after interrupting loud noem.
“From a perspective of the application of the law, we are looking for three separate incidents that passed in a short period of time,” said Campbell.
“First, you have DHS secretary to the press. It was not a period of Q&A and was interrupted. She was interrupted by someone who spoke very strongly,” said CNN analyst in Hunt.
“And his security detail is facing what we now know is the senator. And at this point, it will now be escorted. One thing cannot be interrupted so it is already in progress without having these consequences.”
Campbell added that when Padilla resisted and turned to the agents, the situation was climbed.
“The second incident, in my opinion, goes through the time, as the officers try to drive it, then turn and head to a kind of agents,” said Campbell.
“At this point, from a security perspective, we are removing this person against his will … they realize that he is not someone who will fulfill.”
However, Campbell was concerned about what happened later, when the officers forced Padilla to the ground and handcuffed him outside the press room.
“There will be great questions about this type of tactic,” said Campbell.
“ There were other options available to federal agents … What they do is really sorting them to the knees and then moved quickly to the ground where it was handcuffed. They, again, you are in a federal building, people are projected for weapons, which has a gun or some kind of device like this would not be a concern … so there will be a great question about the tactics used. ”
However, Campbell defended Noem, who has been under fire for the incident.
“This was neither the guilt nor the responsibility of DHS secretary noem,” he said. “He is in the middle of a press conference … I don’t think any of this was his responsibility.”
Padilla was eliminated after interrupting Noem’s observations on the anti-angean riots in Los Angeles.
As Noem accused California leaders of allowing the law, Padilla was planted and called questions about his rhetoric.
“Hands off!” Shouted while safety moved. The video shows him resisting, identifying himself as a senator and continuing to discuss before being pushed out and subjected.
Padilla then criticized the aggressive response, saying: “If this is how the DHS answers a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they do to agricultural workers … throughout the country.”
Noem countered Fox News, saying that Padilla “burst into the room”, “did not identify”, and was “pending to the podium” before being detained.
The publication has sought comments from DHS and Padilla.
